We took a trip out to Knightor Winery to experience their wine tour and tasting day last Sunday and it really was fantastic. We got a little bit stuck in traffic and were late but when we caught up with the tour they were in the winery and David was talking through the process of how they make their sparkling wines which was really interesting with some quirky facts. He told us that with some of their wines that they age, in bottle, they can store around 30,000 in what looked like a big shed and that sometimes the bottles just explode in there. It was a really great talk from David and he was happy to take all out interruptions and questions we had as he talked us through. Then he took us back to the bar where we got to do a wine tasting with some of their wines. (Luckily we arrived in time for the best bit!)

Back at the bar David started with the Trevannion which is an aromatic white wine and I enjoyed that one even though I’m not a big white wine fan, then we had a sweet white wine called the Mena Hweg 2013 which was absolutely my favourite white wine I’ve ever had and this was followed up by a rose called Roseland Pinot Precoce 2014
which was a darker type of rose and really lovely. There was also a rather fruity sparkling white which is the Classic Cuvee and then the tasting ended with their Carpe Diem Red wine, which I had to decline as red wine really isn’t my tipple.

There was nothing awkward about having to turn a particular wine down and if you couldn’t finish your glass there was a little bucket to tip the leftovers in. David did a wonderful job talking through what made each wine special and unique. The conversation was really great and everyone got a chance to chat amongst themselves about the wine and about each other. We met a rather lovely couple with a fondness for German wine.

Knightor Winery also serve a Sunday lunch and at the end of the tour most of our new friends had made reservations and were taken upstairs to enjoy a wonderfully prepared meal. The food served at Knightor is locally sourced wherever possible and they even have their own pastures and orchards. On Fridays you can also enjoy a themed feast night with the family at Knightor where you’ll be treated to a real dining experience with new flavours and a focus on a local ingredient or producer. Their kitchen is also open throughout the week to serve light lunches which you can enjoy al-fresco in their
courtyard or you could indulge yourself in a Cornish Afternoon tea towards the end of the week, but you should make a reservation for this to make sure you get the freshest treats. I’d recommend going that extra mile and have your Cornish Tea with a glass of their sparkling white and really treat yourself!
