A meat eater and a vegetarian walk into a vegan restaurant. They order the food and love it! No joke here, it was absolutely delicious! A slice of cruelty free heaven on the quieter streets of Truro. The Cornish Vegan is a little restaurant where homemade, local goodness is the theme. Run by Dawn and Paul, they make most of their menu items in-house, including vegan ketchup, mayonnaise and even butter! We visited on a Saturday and when we arrived it was super busy. All the tables were full and we wondered if we would ever get a seat, then Dawn came over to us and let use know it wouldn’t be a long wait as there were two tables who were almost finished so we would get a table soon as some people were getting ready to leave.
When we were seated shortly after with the lunch menus, I was pleasantly surprised with what was on offer. Alongside your please-everyone-burger there were wraps, sausage rolls and two amazing sounding sandwiches. The first is a ‘TLT’ sandwich, a vegan take on BLT with fried smoked tofu instead of bacon and then there’s the Jackfruit Sandwich, a vegan take on the BBQ pulled pork sandwich. All these yummy options were just the mains! They also have an amazing array of desserts to choose from, these change regularly and are either made in house or baked by Little Green Vegan Bakery. Our lunch was the vegan burger, the Jackfruit sandwich, and a large portion of chips to share between two and it did not disappoint. The jackfruit does kind of fall out of the bun but hey, that’s what the fork and chips are for. There was coleslaw in the sandwich too which gave it a healthy crunch underneath all the melt-in-your-mouth jackfruit, and the BBQ sauce just pulled the whole thing together and it really did taste like a sweet smoky BBQ pork.

The Cornish Vegan burger was a lentil mushroom and walnut burger served with lettuce, tomato, red onion, plus a homemade mayo and relish. This was my first time trying a vegan meal and definitely won’t be my last! Pushed me outside my comfort zone without being too extreme and tasted even better than a regular burger. The bread for both lunches was locally sourced from Baker Tom’s Bakery. I highly recommend their homemade vegan mayo as well, very much tastes like the real thing and tasted great on the jackfruit sandwich and the chips.

After making our way through a very filling lunch only one of us had room for cake. With a really amazing selection of desserts that day including their vegan cream teas and brownies, the cookies and cream cake was the winning choice.

I have zero regrets for this cake. The icing was the star of this dessert for me, and the ratio between the simple cake and icing was perfect. Every mouthful of cake had some icing leaving no bite dry or too sweet. I would very happily go all the way to Truro again just for a slice of this cake, and the great thing is that I could because The Cornish Vegan do takeaways!
This definitely hits all the right notes for omnivores and vegans alike, and with such a friendly and homely atmosphere I think it’s the perfect lunch time spot for any occasion.
